There are countless options when it comes to having apps on your phone, but here are 4 that might actually save you some money.
Best for “do it yourself” ideas
How to use: Pinterest is a must have when it comes to “do it yourself” ideas. It has everything ideas for wedding decorations, food recipes, home decor, and more. Pinterest is the place to go if you are looking for neat ideas for just about anything, especially if you’re looking to do it yourself and save money.
I haven’t used Pinterest much myself, but my wife uses it all the time; she’s the Pinterest Queen, if you will. Because she uses it so much, it has benefited me, too, because she gets almost all her food recipes from there (easy to make and always delicious). So, yes, I am a fan of Pinterest.
What I’ve noticed most about Pinterest is that it’s flooded with “do it yourself” ideas, and everything you could possibly think of is on there.
Take wedding decorations, for example. I see people spend a lot of money on simple wedding decorations, sometimes around $30-$40 to decorate one table, and that adds up if you have a wedding of 100 people or so. You can find similar ideas on Pinterest for about $20 total, if that. And it would it would probably look just as good, if not better. Pinterest is the app to have if you are looking for “do it yourself” ideas that will help you save money on just about everything.
Best for “do it yourself” videos
How to use: Another great contender in the “do it yourself” space is YouTube, of course. You can find just about anything you need on there; there’s a video for everything. And if there’s not, there will be soon (I guarantee someone is already making a video about it).
What’s interesting about YouTube is that it’s owned by Google; it’s also the second largest search engine (second to Google). So, yeah, Google has the first and second largest search engines fueling the internet. That’s a lot of information.
There are 300 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, and almost 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube every day. Not to mention, YouTube gets 30 million visitors per day. It’s just crazy.
What I like most about YouTube is the “do it yourself” content you can find on there. It’s educational, so you can figure out how to do just about anything. This will end up saving you a ton of money, too.
Over the years, I’ve watched YouTube videos that taught me how to do all kinds of things.
When something needs fixed around the house, I YouTube it. When the car breaks down and something needs to be replaced, like an alternator or something, I YouTube it. When in doubt, I YouTube it. It’s a simple as that.
In fact, I once changed an alternator on my wife’s car in our driveway from watching a “how to” video on YouTube. The video was so detailed, the guy made it look like something I could do, so I did it. I think I saved about $400 on that deal.
YouTube is also the reason I started cutting my own hair. For over 15 years I would spend $15 a week at the barber shop (that’s over $11k). How crazy is that?
One particular day, I was so fed up with all the nonsense of going to the barber shop, I decided to start cutting my own hair. I watched all kinds of YouTube videos to help me figure out how to do my particular cut.
The videos (once again) were so detailed, they made it look easy enough for me to do myself. One day I got enough courage to try it, and the rest is history. I’ve been cutting my own hair ever since, and that was about 4 years ago. I’ve saved over $3k so far and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. YouTube has made it possible for me to save tons of money by watching videos and doing things myself.
3. Quick Checkbook
Best for budgeting
How to use: Quick Checkbook is a neat little app that’s best used for budgeting. In other words, use it to track your expenses every time you spend money.
When trying to save money, using cash is always best. Studies have shown that people who use credit cards spend more on average than people with cash.
Since carrying around cash is not always safe, the next best option is to use a debit card (that way your money stays in the bank where it’s FDIC insured). That’s what I do.
What sucks about using debit cards is that it’s hard to keep track of how much you’ve spent, how much money you have left, and whether or not you’ve gone over budget. That’s where the Quick Checkbook app can help.
Say you have a strict budget that you stick to each time you get paid (you try to do this so you don’t go over budget). And say you get paid every two weeks. In order to not go over budget, you can only spend $300 each time you get paid (this would be for things like gas, food, groceries, or other random purchases), expenses outside your monthly bills.
When you get paid, all you have to do is open the app and start your beginning balance of $300. Each time you use your debit card, enter that amount as an expense on the app, and it will subtract that expense from the total, letting you what you have left to spend. Once you get paid again, reset your budget to $300, and start all over. As long as you stay under that balance each time you get paid, you know you are saving money and staying under budget.
Use this app every time you swipe your debit card. It will keep you under budget and keep you from overspending. It’s like using a checkbook but without writing checks or balancing a checkbook (who uses a checkbook these days, anyway?).
Pro tip: Always start fresh each time you get paid – that way you will save even more and not make a habit of spending more than you should between paychecks. For example, if you have a remaining balance of $20 when you get paid again, don’t simply add $300 to that amount (so now you have $320 to spend). Rather delete that amount and start over at $300 instead. That’s how I do it, and it helps me save even more.
4. Walmart Grocery Shopping
Best for grocery shopping
How to use: Walmart Grocery Shopping app is best for saving money on groceries. It can help you save in a few different ways, and some ways might even surprise you.
First of all, if you’re shopping at Walmart, chances are you’re already saving money. You can sometimes find cheaper items on Amazon, but for the most part you are going to be saving money when you shop at Walmart. Mix that with buying generic brands, and now you’re really saving. But there are still more ways to save using the app.
What’s nice about using the app is that you can use it as your “grocery list” (we all know how making a list and sticking to it can also save you money).
In the app itself, you can make what’s called a Favorites List by clicking the “heart” on certain items – that way it’s easy to find those items on a regular basis, so you can quickly and easily add them to your cart when it’s time to shop or make your list. This is no different than making a shopping list with pen and paper; you just do it on the app instead. Making a list certainly helps you save money, but you can even take it a step further.
Once you’ve added these items to your cart (or made your list), why not go ahead and pay for everything while you’re at it? When you pay for it through the app, you have the option of free delivery or free pickup; you can have it delivered to your front door or have it picked up from a Walmart of your choice.
If you choose grocery pickup, it will save you the hassle of going into the store, and it will also allow you to save money in two more ways.
First, since it’s already paid for, you won’t be able to add more to your list once it’s time to pickup. Whatever you ordered is what you’re gonna get. If you need something else, you will likely have to go into the store to get it. This helps you save by only getting what’s on your list (you can’t get anything extra); grocery pickup through the app helps you do that.
Second, you can save money through substitutions. What happens is this: when they are out of stock on a particular item on your list, they will substitute it for something similar that they do have. If the substitution is more expensive than the item on your list, you will get it for the same price. If it’s less expensive, you will get it for the cheaper price. I find that most of the time the substitutions are more expensive, so I end up saving on the more expensive items. This happens to me all the time. I probably average about one substitution a week, so I have saved quite a bit this way.
There you have it – 4 apps that can help you save money right at your fingertips!
If you’re like me, then saving money is a lifestyle. I save wherever I can; whenever I can. The apps above have helped me do that.
